To install an Atlas II transfer case in a 2005 or newer Xterra or Frontier there are 3 main
parts to the installation.
Taking care of the electrical connections that were on the original transfer case.
The vehicle that the Atlas II is to be installed on should already be a 4WD model. If you
are starting with a 2WD vehicle a 4WD transmission will need to be installed in order for
the Atlas II to fit. The Atlas II will fit both the 5-speed Automatic and the 6-Speed
manual transmission.
The Atlas II should be ordered with the long output shaft to minimize the possibility of
interference with a frame cross member, especially with lifted vehicles. The shifter
should be the remote cable operated unit due to the necessary mounting location. Longer
then standard shifter cables will be needed. Standard length is 4 foot; 7 foot cables will
be needed. Recommended front output option is a 1310 U-joint and rear output with
1330 CV. Order both electrical switches as used on Jeep models (non-vacuum).
Read the installation manuals that come with the Atlas. Refer to them. There will be
some variation between the instruction manuals. The manual for the Atlas II is not
application specific. This manual will describe slightly different order of installation due
to the application specific nature. If you notice a variation in instructions between the
Nissan installation manual and the Atlas II manual, we recommend following the Nissan
adapter manual.
Note that variations may exist. Vehicle content may vary based on build date, options
selected and/or previous modifications. Additional modifications may be needed.
Disconnect the battery, chock the tires, observe safety warnings, and wear protective eye
wear. Watch out for hot and/or moving parts. This manual was written using different
vehicles for mock-up. Variations may exist between pictures in this manual. Trial fit
everything you can before making any cuts.
Basic hand tools will be needed in both metric and standard
No welding is required
Only minor cutting and drilling is required.
